The health care industry is transforming in response to demands for better quality, decreased costs and easier access. In addition, we are seeing greater focus on improving health, wellness and care for consumers and patients. Our health care industry offers to its customers—hospital stays, physician visits, drugs and devices, and insurance. Even if they are excellent, these solutions typically fall well short of what most people want for their overall health care. There are disconnects, duplications, waste, lack of continuity, and gaps that could be eliminated through convergence. Through Convergence, we can provide an innovative, integrated, holistic solution that addresses health repair and restoration, preventive services, well-being, and financing. Convergence allows providers and payers to operate independently while leveraging each other’s strengths to optimize care delivery. Essentials to any convergence strategy is shared risk, clear communication and technology that enables seamless, secure data sharing and analytics to manage costs and provide a best in market consumer/patient experience. According to the Oxford’s Learner’s Dictionary, convergence is (1) to move toward a place from different directions and meet, (2) to move toward each other and meet at a point, or (3) to become very similar or the same. I propose defining convergence in healthcare as: 1. The collaboration of payers and providers to provide population health management, and 2. Divergent healthcare organizations becoming similar organizations. Convergence in healthcare2018 ix a two-day conference providing a forum for decision makers from across the health sector to discuss and learn from one another.
